Avs fighting for fourth

By Larry Robertson, Special to The News

Saturday, Feb. 15 is Boots and Skirts Country Night at Morgan Firestone Arena as the Ancaster Avalanche take on the league-leading Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs.

The night will feature live music in the Molson Canadian Lounge, special prizes and discounts.

Anyone wearing boots or skirts will be entered into a draw to win one of several prizes at the game.

An on-again off-again week culminated in a 4-2 loss for the Ancaster Avalanche to Welland Junior Canadians last Saturday in Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B action at Firestone arena.

Welland sits in third place with 58 points, three points in front of Thorold.  Ancaster is in fifth.

Last Tuesday, they were edged 5-4 by the St. Catharines Falcons, but bounced back with a decisive 7-3 win over the Niagara Falls Canucks.

In St. Catharines, Blake Luscombe, Ryan Lewis, Chris Klack and Hayden Guitard scored once each.

Two nights later, Lewis scored twice with Luscombe picking up a goal and two assists against Niagara Falls. Cole Nagy, Eric Eustace, Dustin Chenier and Brett Farrelly added single goals for the Avs.

Last Saturday, Ancaster led the Junior Canadians 2-1 after two periods only to have Welland rebound with three unanswered third-period goals to earn the victory.  Max Balinson and Lewis scored for Ancaster with Luscombe assisting on both goals.

The Avalanche have just seven games in which to earn home-ice advantage for the playoffs.

On Thursday, Feb. 13 they play the Thorold Blackhawks in Thorold. On Saturday, Feb. 15 they take on the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs at 7:30 p.m. at Firestone arena before travelling to Welland, the next day, Feb. 16.
