The Ancaster Royals are headed to next week’s HWIAC Division 2 football championship after defeating the Highland Hawks in a gritty, defensive battle.
Quarterback Nathan Brown hit receiver Brandon Lyons with a long bomb touchdown in the second quarter and the Royals’ defense kept Highland out of the end z0ne to preserve the win.
Ancaster advances to play Saltfleet in the Division 2 final, Wednesday at Noon at McMaster University.
“We knew it was going to be a field position game,” said Ancaster coach Tim Page.
With Ancaster forced into a third down situation from deep in its own territory, Page showed confidence in his defense by conceding a safety to narrow the margin to just two points.
Highland took possession near midfield following the kickoff, but turned the ball over on downs before reaching field goal range.
Both teams struggled in the passing game on a chilly evening under the lights at Mohawk Sports Park.
