Cole Nagy’s unassisted shorthanded goal seven seconds into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Ancaster Avalanche downed the Niagara Falls Canucks 7-3 in last night’s Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B hockey game at Morgan Firestone Arena.
With the victory, Ancaster moves a step closer to securing home ice advantage for the GHC playoffs. The Avalanche are fifth with 21 wins, 16 losses and five overtime shootout losses while Niagara Falls slips further back in sixth place with 21 wins and 21 losses. Welland Junior Canadians, which the Avalanche play on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Firestone, hold down fourth with a record of 23-14-6 for 52 points.
In addition to Nagy, Blake Luscombe picked up a goal and two assists while Ryan Lewis added a pair of goals. Eric Eustace, Dustin Chenier, and Brett Farrelly added single goals for the Avs. Chenier and Farrelly set up a goal each while Luke Zupan and Spencer Leenders had two assists apiece. Johnny Curran had two goals and an assist for Niagara Falls. Mitch McIntosh added a goal and an assist.
The Avalanche now have just seven games in which to earn home-ice advantage for the playoffs.
Saturday night, they play host to the Welland Junior Canadians in the Firestone Arena.at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 13th they play the Thorold Blackhawks at the Thorold Arena. Saturday, February 15th they take on the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs at 7:30 p.m. in the Firestone Arena before travelling to Welland, the next day, to play the Junior Canadians in the Welland Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, February 21st finds them in the Gaylord Powless Arena to play the Corvairs at 7:30 p.m. Following that, they wind up the regular season schedule with back-to-back games on February 22nd and 23rd against the Canucks and the Port Colborne Pirates. The game on the 22nd is a 7:30 p.m. faceoff, while the Sunday afternoon game goes at 3:30 p.m.
Avalanche Coming Events
The Avalanche’s game with Port Colborne Pirates which was postponed on Saturday, December 14, 2013 because of severe weather conditions was recently re-scheduled to Sunday, February 23rd at 3:30 p.m. in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
“Boots and Skirts Country Night”
Saturday, February 15 is Boots and Skirts Country Night when the Avs archrival Caledonia is in town. The night will feature live music, special prizes and discounts. Anyone wearing boots or skirts will automatically be entered into a draw to win one of several prizes.

Molson Olympic Outdoor Hockey Tournament
Ancaster fans get ready to lace up your skates and play in the Molson Olympic Outdoor 3 on 3 Hockey Tournament in support of the Ancaster Avalanche on Southcote 53's (formerly Faloney’s) new outdoor rink. Tournament games will be played from February 20th to 23rd. Registration for the 3 on 3 tournament is $350 per team.
