Sarah Nurse gets hat trick in weekend action

The Stoney Creek Junior Sabres picked up their seventh win of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season last weekend.

The Junior Sabres shut out the Brampton Thunder 4-0 last Sunday on the road. The Sabres’ game against the Whitby Wolves was cancelled due to weather last Sunday.

Sabres 4, Thunder 0

The Sabres opened the scoring at the 4:40 mark of the first period, when Sarah Nurse converted on a nice feed from Sydney McKibbon after being left alone in the slot. Nurse got another goal five minutes later, when she snapped a quick shot past the Thunder goalie after Madison Field had done all the spade work along the boards.

The Sabres dominated the second period, outshooting the Thunder 14-1. Nurse scored her third goal at the 5:53 mark of the second with help from McKibbon and Field. Christina Putigna banged in a loose puck at the edge of the crease at the 6:51 mark of the period to seal the Thunder’s fate. Sarah Quaranta and Teresa Horner picked up the assists.

Brittany Smrke earned the win in the Sabres’ goal, turning away all eight shots on net.

The Sabres, who occupy eighth place in the 20-team PWHL, will hit the ice for the USA-Canada Cup Dec. 7 to Dec. 9 in Kitchener.

The team will resume league play on Dec. 14, when they take on the Bluewater Hawks on the road.
