MacNab squad fights to end in 44-14 loss

By Mark Newman, News Staff

Being down 44-0 with a quarter to play might make some teams want to quit.

Not the Sir Allan MacNab senior football Lions.

The west Mountain club could have asked for the clock to run on straight time instead of stop-time in the second half of the Hamilton public high school Division 1 championship game against the Westdale Warriors.

They didn’t.

Yes, the favoured Warriors dominated most of the game, but the Lions showed they had some fight left on offence and defence in the fourth quarter.

Travis Sullivan broke the shutout with a five-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and Lions’ quarterback David Robins hit Isaiah Guzylak-Messam with a 60-yard TD strike with less than four minutes to play.

Mercedes Edwards kicked both converts.

“I’m really proud of the way the guys came out,” said MacNab head coach Paul Brown. “They gave everything, every last bit of heart they had.”

Running back Nigel Applewaite was a one-man wrecking crew for Westdale.

He ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and scored another TD on a 41-yard pass and run from quarterback Sam Malavolta.

“I told the O-line we know we can beat this team, I know physically they may be bigger, but we’re stronger and if we play our game and play our tempo, no one can stop us,” Applewaite said.

Joey Riccotone, Kevin Williamson and Mac Sutton also scored touchdowns for Westdale.

Williams’ major came off an 85-yard kick-off return late in the third quarter.

Oliver kicked four converts and the Lions gave up a safety.

The Warriors advance to the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semi-final at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium.

Their opponent has yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, Brown expects most of his troops will be back next season and he expects to contend for another championship

"I hope we're right back here next year, just on the other side of the table," he said.
