Gatestone finds success on rugby pitch

Stoney Creek News

Gatestone elementary school became the first from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board to play a series of exhibition games against teams from the Niagara Public School Board recently.

The Gatestone flag rugby team traveled to Niagara Falls and went 2-0, including a 13-11 win against Greendale Public School. Greendale is the reigning three-time defending champion from the Niagara District School Board.

Gatestone has had a rugby program for six years.  It was an initiative started by Saltfleet District High School for its feeder schools.

Satlfleet holds a tournament in the fall, aat which Gatestone is the defending champion in the boys and girls divisions.

But Gatestone coach Daniel Lane has added practices in the fall and spring and tournaments in other boards.

Gatestone also has almost 50 students playing rugby for the Stoney Creek Rugby Club.
