Brenda Johnson, Ward 11 councillor
would like to thank all of the residents who have contacted me about volunteering for an outdoor skating rink at Winona Park.
We’ve have had enough residents come forward that I’m setting up a meeting with staff to have a plan put in place for the rink. As soon as the date is confirmed, I’ll be contacting everyone so that they can attend.
If you are interested, please let me know and I’ll be happy to include you. The more volunteers, the greater the success of the outdoor rink. Please watch my Web page as the meeting date will be posted there or you can call into the office and we’ll let you know.
Winona Pubilc School land
The former Winona Public School on Winona Road has still not been declared surplus and is still owned by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. We have been receiving complaints about debris being left around their dumpster and city staff are now working with the school board to get it cleaned up and keep it clean.
You may have noticed a number of sidewalk repairs and replacements happening in your community over the past few months. This is due to a special sidewalk allowance given to each ward. Concrete sidewalks are being repaired or replaced with concrete, but if you have an asphalt sidewalk, they are being repaired or replaced with asphalt.
Because this is a cheaper option, we are able to repair/replace more areas. As urbanization occurs, the asphalt will slowly disappear along with the ditches, but it does take time.
I’d like to thank everyone who attended my recent community meeting on policing. The police gave an excellent presentation and a lot of questions and concerns were addressed.
As a result, we recently had the speed indicator trailer placed on Highway 8 between McNeilly and Lewis roads. There have been a lot of positive comments.
ATVs on private property and agriculture farm land are creating a huge problem for property owners. The police are working on this issue and they advise that trespassing ATV users will be charged with trespassing.
Please get permission before you use someone else’s land. If you don’t have permission, then find another safe way to enjoy your ATV, as this is considered trespassing.
Please check out my Web page if you haven’t recently. There are many upcoming events for the community and they include local Christmas activities.
If you have a not-for-profit event happening in Ward 11 that you would like advertised, please let me know.
