United Church protesters of MP David Sweet’s Israel trip should have went to Middle East embassies

Derek Kerr, Dundas

Re: Group protests MP’s trip, Aug. 7.

Sadly, once again ministers of the United Church of Canada showed their anti-Israel bias by protesting MP David Sweet’s recent trip to Israel.

Mr. Sweet was part of a delegation of Canadian Parliamentarians (three  Liberals and three Conservatives) to see first-hand the situation in Israel.

The United Church of Canada knows very well that Hamas is a designated terrorist organization in Canada. The Hamas Charter speaks of killing Jews some 12 times, as Mr. Sweet rightly points out. Mr. Sweet also pointed out that the loss of life on both sides of this conflict is regrettable. Click here.

Remember, Hamas uses places of worship in Gaza to store weapons, fire rockets and conceal tunnels. Hamas does not want a Palestinian state. It wants the end of Israel. Hamas is also using United Nations schools as shelters to fire rockets at Israel. They are also deliberately using human shields to further terror in the region as Prime Minister Stephen Harper has stated.

I applaud Mr. Sweet and the other Parliamentarians who made the trip to Israel. The ministers of the United Church of Canada would’ve better spent their time protesting outside the embassies in Ottawa of other Middle East countries, which do not share our values or those of Israel.

Canada stands with Israel, as do I.
