Re: Development pressure grows in west end, May 31.
Kudos to Keith Sharp, Dundas community council member who was quoted in this article as saying,”Anything over three storeys is a problem.”
He gets it. So do the majority of Dundas residents, I suspect. Credit also goes to Hamilton Community News writer Craig Campbell who has connected the dots between all of these proposed developments in the west end of Dundas to illustrate brilliantly that over-intensification and over-shadowing is looming large in our community.
Developers are business people; they develop properties for profit. Some are blessed with vision, care about the communities they build in, seek to blend in with the community and work with neighbourhood residents to address concerns. Others just want to build as large as they can get away with to make more money at the expense of existing homeowners.
Dundas residents need to let city planning committee members know that we don’t want Dundas as we know to die. Don’t allow developers to sell off the charm of old Dundas until nothing remains of the character we love.
There are plenty of brownfields in Hamilton on main streets and under-populated areas that need residential development. Dundas is already the most densely populated area within Hamilton.
Six storeys on 24 Brock St. N., if allowed to be built, will start a dangerous precedent of over-development abutting the escarpment and could be the start of another Creekside in the west end. Old Dundas will suffocate, squeezed by the pressure from these behemoths.
