Rethink education spending

Re: “School closure system is a failure,” March 27, 2014

The writer correctly states school closures are occurring because the current Ontario education funding formula has passed its before date. School boards are the victims of that formula, not its advocates.

The writer suggests returning taxing power to local school boards. That system worked financially and efficiently for boards, taxpayers (voters), students and community aspirations.

The three major political parties in Ontario refuse to discuss alternative solutions to educational funding. The answer is already in practice. Public education dollars are distributed by language, not religion in the provinces of Quebec, Newfoundland, Manitoba, Alberta and B.C. Ontario can follow their lead and create a healthy and financial education climate by implementing a one secular school system.

Provincial and municipal elections are on the horizon. Education funding will be an issue.
