There has been much controversy about the use or perhaps misuse of lethal force among our men and women in blue.
The 2012 statistic stated 33 per cent of all Taser incidents involved attempts to subdue a mentally ill person of which 38 per cent were armed. Noticeably absent was the remaining 66 per cent statistic and how many of them were armed?
When an officer misjudges a confrontation and believes a Taser is the appropriate force but suddenly faces a gun pointing at him or her, what does he or she say? “Time out! Give me a second to pull out my hand gun.”
More people are carrying illegal guns and are not afraid to use them. Officers always prepare for the worst. In many instances they only have a few seconds to decide how to react. If they guess wrong, it could cost them their lives or those of others.
Officers are well trained but are not mind readers. They have to deal daily with the underbelly of our society. Give them the credit they deserve. An agitated person committing a crime, a mentally ill person, a distraught person in a family dispute could actually be an armed drug dealer in disguise. It’s not easy to decide who is really who as some would want us to believe.
