Bigger not always better when it comes to schools, says reader

Although well-intentioned, Dundas badly blundered when it turned the Desjardins Canal Turnaround into a lifeless park.

That was 47 year ago. It is now about to pull off another major blunder, this time with its only remaining high school in the core area of Dundas. Closing Parkside High School, located in an idylic setting, will do immense harm to the heart of Dundas and to citizens who find Olde Dundas such an ideal place to raise their families. It is astounding to realize that there has been so little public outcry over the school board’s decision to close Parkside in 2014.

There is no research evidence to indicate that the larger the high school, the better the quality of education. Parents who want their children to attend a smaller high school where kids do not get lost in the crowd, should present the school board with a petition containing fists full of signatures, to convince the trustees that bigger isn’t always better. They might find that renovating Parkside is a much sounder idea than walking into yet another long-lasting made-in-Dundas blunder.
