LETTER: Trustees: Defend kids, don’t compromise values

Trustees: I feel for you, I do not envy you, for you have been unfairly placed in the position of bearing the weight and heavy responsibility of making up the educational financial shortfall created by others, at the expense of a network of small walkable and successful community elementary schools.
Let’s call a spade a spade. Who and what was it that placed you in this position of making the final decision as to what schools should be closed? I’m sure that you did not wake up one morning and say to yourself, “Let’s close some schools”. The problem stems from our elected maladroit money handlers at the provincial command centre and their habitual robbing from Peter to pay Paul resolve. It is a sad day when this mismanagement of tax dollars, coupled with a backroom antiquated funding formula, cast a dark shadow that blocks out common sense.
This closure business is all about money. I’m a senior and a taxpayer and I consider taxes paid to education as an investment, providing for the greatest return that life can provide.
You, the trustees, are the last line of defence for the children. Please do not compromise core values, for you are the keeper of the children.
