LETTER: Retiring school trustees shouldn’t be let off hook

To date, seven out of the 11 trustees on the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board have given notice that they will not be running for re-election on Oct. 27. These trustees — Bishop, Brennan, Glauser, Orban, Peddle, Simmons and Turkstra — should not be allowed by the public to get off so easy.
Unless any one of them can present a doctor’s note stating that running for re-election would not be good for their health, every one of these individuals should be made to stay around and run for another term.
In this manner, they can either be voted out by the public for their past actions or can be re-elected to work through the consequences of their past actions — especially for their roles in the central Mountain school closure process.
No one should be allowed to fast track the school closure process and ignore public opinion as they had and then get to pass their handiwork off to the incoming trustees that had no part in the decisions made to date and have no ability to reverse any of the actions.
It’s entirely unfair to have these newly elected trustees tow the board party line and have to defend — or worse yet, have to finish implementing — any of the actions their predecessors have set in motion.
