LETTER: Not all students can easily transfer

re: Students explain why they chose Westmount (Jan. 2)
A student mentioned that “Westmount … makes it simple for students to transfer from other schools.”
This was not the experience of our oldest daughter. She attended a private Christian school until the completion of Grade 10 when she attempted to transfer to Westmount.
Even though she had a 94 average and was used to a self-paced program, she was told she would have to take Grades 9 and 10 over again as her private school credits would not be accepted there.
Rather than repeat two years of school, she chose to home school herself for Grade 11. Another school accepted her Accelerated Christian Education credits on par and she completed Grade 12 at Sherwood, where she graduated with honours and received a scholarship.
She then completed a double major in political science and sociology at McMaster over the next four years and graduated with an honours B.A. She now attends York University getting her masters in sociology.
My daughter doesn’t regret starting university at age 16.
Too bad Westmount wouldn’t accept her into their program. The Westmount program is designed for students like her and she would have been an exemplary student there if she had been given the opportunity.
