LETTER: Hard to sympathize over Cardinal Heights

Re: Under review (July 17)
There has been a great deal lost in the most recent round of elementary school closure reviews. The communities of Linden Park, Eastmount Park, Bell Stone, Roxborough Park and Woodward have schools closing and in many cases, students who currently walk to a local school are now facing a bus ride to a more distant location.
This is just not the case with Cardinal Heights middle school. The students who currently walk to Cardinal Heights for Grades 6-8 attend Pauline Johnson for Grades JK-5.
Mere metres separate these two schools.
They share the same property and with all of the Central Mountain schools including Pauline Johnson moving to a JK-8 format, there is simply no need for a middle school and not enough students in one community to fill two schools.
The consolidation of Cardinal Heights and Pauline Johnson into one JK-8 building was discussed throughout the ARC process and is the logical result of eliminating the middle school format.
I can understand that this neighbourhood is mourning a loss and the impact this transition will have on the Cardinal Heights students and staff is regrettable, but in the end they still have a community school and I am sure there are many parents and students in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board who would be delighted to be keeping one of their two schools.
