LETTER: Bike lanes better than bike share

Re: Bike share program limping along (Aug. 7)
I applaud city council for embracing the idea of getting more people on bikes.
However, I find it odd that council would spend money on a bike share program to encourage more cycling when the city currently doesn’t have enough bike lanes, compared to other cities with the program.
If council wants to encourage more cycling, more bike lanes would have been a better way to spend the $1.6 million of Metrolinx money.
I love to ride, so I already own a bike, as I’m sure most people like me do as well. So, how many more people are out there who want to ride, but don’t already have a bike?
SoBi might be a good idea for tourists who want to tour the city, or for people who need the occasional ride here and there, but I’m not sure this will generate the numbers needed to see a return on investment in the program.
Many people want to ride a bike, but are afraid to because of the lack of bike lanes — especially on the Mountain — and they fear riding on the roads without them.
Invest in more bike lanes and more people will get out and ride.
