Infrastructure never meant to handle car-only malls

 By Chris French, Ancaster

Re: New commercial corridor, (April 24).

As a resident of Shaver Road in Ancaster, I am watching with dismay the southwest end of Ancaster develop into a sprawling strip mall.

Lowe’s and Longo’s and more retail stores only accessible by car are becoming too much to stomach.

The developer may say it is “exciting,” and our councillor may be pleased by the potential “tax dollars” and how it “squares the entire area off,” but what do the local residents have to say?

This local resident wants to encourage the community to “Shop in the Village” and continue to support the businesses we already have. Let us keep an area which is friendly to small business. Let us strive to be sustainable, attractive and, as far as possible, community orientated.

Even if we leave these aspirations aside for one moment, I do not think anyone can deny the car traffic we experience now is clearly showing that the infrastructure was never meant to handle the car-only use of the malls we seem to want on the edge of our community.
