HWDSB house system in Ancaster must respect freedom

By Klaas Detmar, Ancaster

Re: Controversial  system back for another school year, June 26.

Thank you for bringing this item to our attention again. It can be easy to let the young people not be heard. I am surprised that no school trustee is intervening in this situation that seems so unfair and unjust. It reminded me of my dad who was rapped on his knuckles every time he wrote with his left hand because the policy of the school board was that everyone had to write using their right hand.

On the surface, it may seem the right thing to do; to force the acceptance of the behavior of a few upon the majority but all that will happen is young people will grin and bear it and isolate themselves even further from a lifestyle that does not fit their DNA. What the superintendent has done is create a new generation of young people who will send their own children to another education system, one that respects their choices and freedoms and feelings.

By belittling the clear majority, the survey results send a message to these young people that they are not important enough to listen to. No wonder there is so little interest and involvement in our young voters.
