COMMUNITY COLUMNIST: Hands-on fun with summer reading club

By Maureen Johnson, special to the News

This year’s TD Summer Reading Club activities are designed to engage Hamilton families in the spirit of curiosity and hands-on discovery with programming to encourage making friends, making time, making a mess and making memories.
Drop in to any Hamilton Public Library location or one of the two bookmobiles and register online to receive your official Summer Reading Club badge.
Attend a program, enter a contest, read any book you want and earn prizes from the treasure chest.
Want to set some personal reading goals over the summer? Challenge yourself and use the online Reading Tracker to chart your reading prowess and earn more prizes in our monthly online draws.
This summer, Hamilton Public Library is truly living our mission statement of “Freedom to Discover.”
Many of our programs are based on the principles behind STEM and STEAM.  We’ve built science, technology, engineering, art and math into our hands-on activities. The entire family can read and learn and discover something every day together this summer at the library.
For convenience, all of our programs and contests for all ages can be found in the new 2014 Summer Program Guide. Pick up your copy at any branch or download a copy online and plan all your summer fun now. You can keep up with all of the events online at hpl.ca. Just look for the events calendar.
Wondering what types of programs you can expect? Get up close and personal with reptiles or greyhounds, or pet an alpaca. Fix your bike and learn about bike safety. Have some quiet time and join a yoga class. Be a good neighbour and knit for a cause. Learn about website coding.
Check out the events at your local library and discover another location this summer by attending a program that matches your curiosity and interests.
And don’t forget to take discovery home with our print and digital collections. Download eBooks to take with you to the cottage or the park. Take a peek at Project Kid: 100 Ingenious Crafts for Family Fun.
Choose a Royal Botanical Gardens pass for your prize, grab a copy of National Geographic Kids Get Outside Guide and explore the great outdoors.
Take the making home with DK’s Mommy and Me Craft, I Can Make That! or Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts for Kids.
Drop in and talk to library staff; we can’t wait to help make your summer even better.
