Changes to parliament done with substantial notice, too

Mark Platt, Dundas

Re: Changes To Old Age Security will be done with substantial notice, Feb. 2.

The reform Conservatives have had a majority for less than a year and they are already out of touch with Canadians.

While MP David Sweet will prosper in retirement with a lavish MP pension, the rest of Canadians will have to work longer because of his party’s reckless tax cuts.
Whether the change is made now or phased in over time, the large baby boom demographic will be negatively affected, and so will our economy. The governments scare-mongering comparisons to Greece and its financial woes is misleading.

Our well-regulated financial system has helped us through the recession. Greece, along with many other European countries, does not have our natural resources or direct access to the U.S. market.

In spite of these facts, the Conservatives will ram through the changes to pay for their tax cuts to the wealthy, mistakenly hoping voters will not remember in 2015.

To paraphrase Mr. Sweet, the changes to the next federal parliament will be done with substantial notice.
