Ainslie Wood has not forgotten

Re: Hamilton trustee seeks NDP nomination, Website, May 1.

I was shocked and disappointed to learn that Alex Johnstone has the nerve to run for provincial office in a riding that includes Ainslie Wood.

The people of Ainslie Wood have not forgotten how Johnstone caused our ongoing community crisis by cynically voting to sell our school, Prince Philip, and use the money for lavish renovations at a school in a much wealthier neighbourhood.

That may earn her popularity among the elite, but we in Ainslie Wood see it as unethical and contrary to the principles of social democracy that the NDP supposedly promotes. My struggling neighbourhood feels cheated and betrayed by Johnstone and the other self-serving, out-of-touch NDP trustees.

The people of Ainslie Wood will not forget that Johnstone voted to put our kids into buses for long daily commutes -- hurting their health and their potential for academic achievement -- while the privileged kids of Westdale get to walk or bike to their school.

Ms. Johnstone’s vote against Prince Philip was a vote against the entire Ainslie Wood community.

In our time of need, she was not there for us. In her time of need (for votes), we — and hopefully the rest of the riding — will reject Johnstone and send her to a well-deserved political retirement.
