COMMUNITY COLUMNIST: The public library delivers ... digitally speaking

Hamilton Mountain News

By Michael Ciccone, special to the News

Many of you have probably received Internet-ready mobile device such as tablets or phones as a gift over the holidays. If you currently have a Hamilton Public library card, you’re just a few taps away from enjoying our ever-growing digital collections.

Let’s start with eBooks. We offer thousands of eBooks for all ages through our partnership with Overdrive, many of which are the latest bestsellers. Apps are available for most devices or you can read eBooks right in your browser. For pre-school children, we offer Tumblebooks, an interactive picture book viewer that allows the parent to read to the child or access an optional audio track.

For audiobook lovers, we have two sources. Overdrive provides a large collection of titles and they are downloadable through their apps. We also offer audio books through Hoopla our digital media platform.

The Hoopla audiobook collection has the added benefit of instant access. Hoopla also offers digital movies and music. The movie collection is growing and each title can be borrowed for three days. The breadth of the music collection will astound you and each album can be borrowed for seven days. We also offer music through Freegal, which lets each customer download and keep three songs per week.

For magazine readers, hundreds of digital titles are instantly available through our partnership with Zinio. Whether keeping up with latest gossip or the latest technology, we have a digital magazine for you.

Newshound? You’ll love Library Press Display, offering digital versions of the latest editions of local, national and international newspapers. It’s as if they were dropped on your doorstep.

For historians, relive a Hamilton memory by perusing our historical images. We have more than 12,000 digital images posted and we’re always adding more. If you find an image that you love, we have a fee-based service that provides you with a high resolution copy.

And there’s more. Get reading recommendations from Novelist. Learn a language with Mango. Shop smart with full access to Consumer Reports. Learn or hone a skill with Learning Express Library. Repair your car with Chilton’s Auto Library. And as always, we have many sources to help with homework or personal research projects.

To get started, please go to the library’s website ( or ask staff at any branch for assistance.

One of HPL’s strategic priorities is to continue to sustain our physical collections for as long as our community requires them. However, we pride ourselves on recognizing customer needs and responding pro-actively, and the demand for digital collections continues to grow.

Whatever your preference, we hope that you will visit us, physically and/or virtually in 2014.

Michael Ciccone is Director of Collections at the Hamilton Public Library.
