Winterfest turns 30 at Gourley Park

Gourley Park’s 30th Winterfest is being held Sunday.
There will be no shortage of fun, promises organizer Randy Chapple, though there may be a shortage of the fluffy white stuff.
Generally, the event has been blessed with snow and sun, though often bitterly cold.
But while the calendar says winter, the forecast for the weekend doesn’t suggest there will be snow on the ground for this year’s event.
“We’ve only had one year where the temperature was warm,” says Chapple, organizer of the event for the past half-dozen years. “That was Mudfest.”
About 750 from the southwest Mountain community are expected to turn out for the event, which runs from noon until 2 p.m.
Regardless the weather, there will be numerous events at Gourley Park’s Winterfest.
Chimo the Winterfest mascot, Cats Claws face painters, horse-drawn wagon rides, games — including an obstacle course and lumberjack events — and a fundraising barbecue. Proceeds from the food sales help fund park improvements, future events and the kids baseball league.
Pre-registration for T-ball, 3-pitch and slo-pitch leagues (ages 4-13) will also take place that day. See www.gourleypark.com for more information.
While not in place yet, every effort will be made to get an ice rink in place for Sunday, says Chapple.
Anyone who would like to volunteer withe the community association is asked to call Chapple at 905-388-5185.
