Van crash knocks out power, causes traffic chaos in Stoney Creek

A rush-hour collision that toppled a utility pole and cut power to local customers backed up traffic in all directions near the intersection of Centennial Parkway and King Street Friday afternoon.

“The problem is you have a very high volume of traffic flowing through that area at this time of day,” said east-end Hamilton police Staff Sergeant Mike Weber. “There’s been a loss of power, but the traffic lights aren’t out — it’s the volume of traffic.”

Weber said that as far as police knew, there were no injuries in the collision, which crumpled the front of one van and toppled a utility pole — and attached wires — onto a another van.

Passersby were reporting that traffic had backed up in all directions as the collision was being cleaned up.
