The City of Hamilton is taking a proactive approach to the growing problem of illegal dumping.
Project Trash Talk is a 12-month pilot initiative by the city to curb the cost of waste cleanup. The initiative began on Sept. 24 and includes a collaborative effort with CN Rail, City of Hamilton public works department and donation box operators.
The five-person surveillance team is active 24 hours a day working on enforcement. Fines for illegal dumping start at $500 plus recovery cleanup costs.
The city currently has a comprehensive recycling and composting program, which should leave little waste for curbside garbage. The city’s limits are set at one one container/bag (up to 23 kilogrmas total) per week. The city also offers amnesty weeks the last full week of the month which allows up to three containers/bags per week to help residents properly dispose of accumulated waste. The city has set its sights on reducing illegal dumping by residents, businesses, including contractors, and anyone who doesn’t seem to be concerned about dumping waste wherever it suits them, to the dismay of others and the environment.
Discarded waste includes items displaced on a neighbour’s property, apartment and commercial dumpsters, roadside, household trash in city and private litter containers, vacant properties, railroad tracks, highways and underpasses and at donation boxes.
