Hamilton police are on the lookout for a thief who reached through an open car window to snatch a woman’s purse outside an east Mountain bank.
Det. Const. Greg Slack said the victim had just withdrawn $250 at the TD Canada Trust at the corner of Rymal Road and Upper Gage Street shortly before noon on Aug. 27 and was chatting on her cell phone after returning to her vehicle.
She’d placed her purse on the passenger seat and a man approached that side of the vehicle, grabbing the purse and running off into a nearby townhouse with the woman in pursuit.
The victim lost sight of the thief, but responding officers were able to find the purse with the help of a police dog. A citizen meanwhile recovered the woman’s wallet in the bank parking lot.
Slack said police continue their investigation as they await receipt of video surveillance footage. Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The suspect is described as white, five feet 11 inches to six feet tall, between 210 and 220 pounds in weight, with a stocky build, dark brown hair in a brush cut and stubble on his face. He wore blue jeans, a black tank top and may have had arm tattoos.
