Tech savvy educator earns accolades

Heidi Siwak, a teacher at Dundas Central Public School, has been named one of Canada’s leading tech savvy educators who embrace 21st century learning on a daily basis.

The MindShare Learning Report, a learning and technology eMagazine, today announced the winners of the fourth annual MindShare Learning 21st Century Classroom Video Challenge.

“I’m so so excited…thank you very much, it is a great honour,” said Siwak, Central Canada winner. “When I looked at the other video submissions, I didn’t think we were going to win with such a competitive field.”

Among other activities, Siwak and her sixth graders in Class 62 have created and developed an iPhone app entitled Welcome to Dundas. The students have selected numerous activities and locations throughout the community, which they have researched and photographed.

They are now creating all of the artwork and interface design and writing all of the contents for the app. The ultimate goal is have their program published on The App Store in a few months.

Robert Martellacci of MindShare Learning Report said the annual contest is a testament to the digital learning revolution that is happening across the Canadian education landscape and beyond.

“This year we had a record number of submissions,” he said. “As well, it was the most competitive to date. The quality was outstanding and the judge’s panel was extremely challenged in arriving at three national winners.”
