Now that swimsuit season is finally here, there’s good news and bad news for Stoney Creek residents.
The good news is local residents won’t have to travel very far to find a newly refurbished outdoor swimming pool.
The bad news is the Green Acres outdoor pool will remain closed for a second straight year.
Rom D’Angelo, the city’s manager of corporate buildings and technical services, said a $2.6-million renovation of the Randall Avenue pool is slated to begin August. The 57-year-old facility was also shuttered during the 2013 season.
In the meantime, Hamilton’s Rosedale outdoor pool is once again open for business. The refurbished facility reopened on June 27 at 30 Greenhill Ave.
D’Angelo said the Green Acres pool is currently out for tender and bids are being accepted until July 9.
“We’re anticipating awarding (the contract) later in July or early August, with construction by August, 2014 and opening by June 2015,” said D’Angelo.
The project includes a new pool with a ramp entry and a depth ranging from three to nine feet. The pool will also include a new watersport court for basketball and volleyball, new spray pad to replace the old wading pool and a pool change house with a male and female change room, plus a universal change room. The new Green Acres pool will be similar to the Rosedale pool, which has reopened following a $1.7-million renovation.
“Because of the close proxinity of Rosedale to Green Acres, plus you’ve got the lower Stoney Creek Recreation Centre, I think what you’ll see through the summer is people migrating to those newer facilities,” said D’Angelo.
Rosedale’s new outdoor heated pool features a beach entry with splashing spider water feature, 20-metre lane swim area and a deck, including seating and shade umbrellas. Public swimming is available from 1-7 p.m. on weekdays and 1-4 p.m. on weekends.
