Stoney Creek councillor wants crackdown on ‘charity’ clothing boxes

By Emma Reilly, The Hamilton Spectator

The city is looking into regulating charity drop-off bins.

Councillor Maria Pearson has asked city staff to create a policy that would monitor the ubiquitous drop-off boxes after several began popping up haphazardly in Stoney Creek.

“It was a blue charity bin being dropped all over my ward,” she said. “They were being put on private property, they were being put on city property, there was no contact information.”

Pearson said the city spend thousands of dollars removing the boxes and often had no way of tracking down its owners. She also points out that the boxes create major problems with illegal dumping.

City staff are drafting a policy about the charity bins and will report back to council with a proposal.
