The Stoney Creek Chamber of Commerce will present its Community Awards on May 22.

Stoney Creek chamber names Community Award honourees

The Stoney Creek Chamber of Commerce has named its annual Community Award winners. Awards will be presented on May 22 at Winona Vine Estates.

Teresa DiFalco is the 2013 Citizen of the Year. DiFalco has volunteered for numerous community groups, including the Winona Peach Festival, United Way and many others. The Stoney Creek resident has also organized municipal election debates and served on a community advisory committee for the Stoney Creek Urban Boundary Expansion. In 2007, DiFalco was credited with launching a successful advocacy campaign for a new elementary school in Winona.

Two Junior Citizen of the Year award winners will be honoured this year following a tie vote. Gurleen Dhaliwal completed more than 500 volunteer hours, including fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, volunteering at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and teaching Punjabi. The Orchard Park Secondary School student overcame a struggle with undiagnosed Lupus and was subsequently hospitalized with rheumatoid arthritis.

Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School student Fiorella Villanueva-Heldmaier is also a Junior Citizen winner. Villanueva-Heldmaier has compiled more than 2,800 volunteer hours. An honour roll student, she has participated in a suicide prevention program, a Red Cross anti-bullying campaign and numerous other school-sanctioned events.

This year’s Large Business of the Year is Baffin Inc. Known for its professional grade footwear, the company oversaw expansion of its Arvin Avenue headquarters in Stoney Creek, where all of the company’s products are designed.

Golfi Concrete and Drain Limited is this year’s Outstanding Small Business. Last year, the Stoney Creek business led numerous fundraisers that generated more than $100,000 for an accessible playground at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

A Legacy Award will be presented to Laurence Marshall of Lucky Bear. Marshall, who opened his first business in 1969, is the face of Lucky Bear Services Limited, which focuses on diesel vehicle emissions testing, towing and road plowing. Marshall is a founding member of the Stoney Creek Optimist Club and long time member of the Battlefield Optimist Club. He has donated the use of his vehicles for numerous Stoney Creek Santa Claus Parades.

A Community Recognition award will be presented to the Orchard Park Robotics Team 2056, which has received numerous national and international awards and championship titles.
