The cause of the explosion at Custom Powder Coating Inc. in Stoney Creek Jan. 28 remains under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office.

Stoney Creek blast’s cause still being probed

By Laura Lennie, News Staff

Ontario Fire Marshal investigators have yet to determine the cause of an explosion at a small shop on Barton Street East in Stoney Creek more than three weeks ago that caused a partial building collapse and injured one worker.

“(We) still haven’t heard anything from the fire marshal’s office in regards to the cause,” Hamilton Fire Department spokesperson Claudio Mostacci said. “Timelines for these can sometimes take quite a bit of time for them to actually come up with a cause.”

Emergency crews were called to Custom Powder Coating Inc. on Jan. 28 around 11 a.m., after an explosion blew the rear garage door off of the shop and collapsed the roof.

The worker sustained minor injuries.

A second employee who was inside at the time of the explosion didn’t require medical treatment.
