Stoney Creek blast sends worker to hospital

A worker was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after an explosion blew the rear garage door off of a small shop on Barton Street East in Stoney Creek on Monday morning.

Hamilton Fire Department spokesperson Claudio Mostacci said the force of the 11 a.m. blast at Custom Powder Coating sent the door into a nearby field and collapsed the roof.

“When we came, we found that the building had partially collapsed and the west wall had been blown out,” he said.

A second employee who was inside at the time of the explosion didn’t require medical treatment.

Mostacci said the city’s building department was called in to assess the structural damage of the building, located west of the corner of Green Road.

“The other businesses on either side, the fire walls have been damaged, so they’ll have to be assessed, but the entire roof on the building where the explosion occurred has come down,” he said, adding businesses in adjoining units were evacuated.

Mostacci said the cause of the explosion had not been determined as of press deadline.

Both the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority were called in to investigate.
