Stoney Creek Avondale robbed at gunpoint

Hamilton police are investigating after a Stoney Creek variety store was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday evening.

Just before 10 p.m., a masked suspect entered Avondale Variety on Highway 8 and brandished what appeared to be a hand gun. Police said the suspect simultaneously pointed the weapon at the store clerk and at a customer.

The clerk complied with a demand for cash and the suspect fled with the contents of the register. No one was injured.

The suspect is described as a white male,  in his 30s, with a medium build. He was wearing a black toque, a white cotton turtle neck pulled up over his face, a black wind breaker jacket with a stripe down each sleeve, matching black pants with a white stripe on each leg and white running shoes. The suspect has dark brown facial hair, tanned skin and smelled strongly of cigarettes.

Both the Hamilton police K9 and the BEAR Units responded to assist with the investigation.
