Aviation artist Lance Russwurm was busy last week painting shark teeth on the engine cowlings of the Avro Lancaster at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. The Lanc is scheduled to fly during Skyfest this weekend.

Skyfest takes off this weekend

Warplane museum show scaled down this year

The sky over the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museumwill be filled with aircraft on Father’s Day weekend.

The museum is holding Skyfest from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and only 2,000 tickets are available for the event each day.

“There’s very little on-site parking,” said museum marketing manager Al Mickeloff of the decision to scale down this year’s event from previous years.

Mickeloff noted the cost of renting local sod farms for parking and busing spectators to the museum has cost them more than $100,000.

While it’s not a traditional air show, Mickeloff said there will be flying all day during Skyfest.

Guest aircraft include the T-28 Flying Horsemen and the Commemorative Air Force’s B-24 “Diamond Lil” Liberator along with a de Havilland Mosquito, Spitfire and Hurricane from the Military Aviation Museum.

A variety of CWH aircraft will also be flying each day including the Avro Lancaster which has been painted with the markings of Ropey, another Lanc from the 419 Squadron for the weekend.

That includes shark teeth on the cowlings of the four Merlin engines.

Ropey completed 66 missions over Europe in the Second World War.

The Lanc will be restored to its previous markings after the air show.

In addition, the museum will be holding an evening air show on Saturday.

“Once you move into the dark, the acts are incredible,” said Mickeloff.

The night program will feature a variety of fire works, museum aircraft and aerobatics starting with a barbecue at 7 p.m. and flying begins at 8:30 p.m.
