Sackville closed for renovations until Oct. 1
Users of Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre appear to be settling into their temporary new home at the Bethel (Gospel Tabernacle) church and Hill Park Recreation Centre.
Several programs from the busy rec centre on Upper Wentworth were shifted to Bethel and Hill Park when Sackville shut down for renovations on Aug. 1.
It’s slated to reopen on Oct. 1.
A visit to the large Bethel complex on Upper Wellington last Friday afternoon saw a large group seniors playing euchre in one room while a Dance Funk exercise class was underway next door.
Gail Hunter said attending the dance class at Bethel is not a problem for her.
“It’s still close to home and it’s great they were able to find a facility to accommodate the classes so we can keep exercising through the summer,” said the 63-year-old Hunter.
“The people are nice in here,” added 76-year-old Irmgard Hein, another Dance Funk participant. “I used to be able to walk to Sackville, now I have to use my car.”
Lisa Dunlop, once of the Dance Funk instructors, said the program is working well atBethel.
“It’s a lovely facility,” Dunlop said. “I miss the mirrors that we have in our dance studio. Some people don’t miss the mirrors, some people are delighted that there’s no mirrors.”
Cathy Kohler, recreation supervisor for seniors in Hamilton, said they haven’t had any major complaints about the temporary facilities from the seniors.
“They’re adjusting to all the programs,” said Kohler, who noted the Friday euchre games have seen increased participation at Bethel.
Kohler said over the last two weeks about 155 seniors were visiting Bethel each day and as many as 60 were using programs at Hill Park.
There are no Sackville activities as Bethel this week.
Kohler noted the church rooms have been booked by another group.
