Northland Properties of British Columbia is proposing to construct a six-storey, 200-room hotel at the corner of South Service Road and Centennial Parkway in a site plan submitted to the city last week.
The 9,534-square-meter hotel and conference facility will be operated by the Sandman Hotel Group, which Northland owns, and is based inVancouver. The first floor of the facility will include a Denny’s and a Moxie’s Classic Grill. The one-story, 432-square-metre Denny’s will be located on the west end, while the 840.5-square-metre Moxie’s will be set at the east end of the facility. There is projected to be 277 parking spaces.
Duncan Salim Kassam, vice-president of marketing for Sandman Hotel, said the company is expected to hire 350 people to work at the facility.
Sandman operates three classes of hotels: Sandman Hotel, Inns and Suites and Sandman Signature Hotels and Resorts. Kassam said the location is perfect for a Sandman Hotel. Northland also oversees the Denny’s and Moxie’s franchises in Canada. The company operates 35 properties in six provinces.
“This is a great place for these types of facilities,” said Ward 5 councillor Chad Collins. ‘This will be a gateway for the city.”
Once the site plan is approved by city officials, construction could begin late this year.
Smart Centres, which owns the property where the former Waxman scrap yard was located first proposed developing the massive retail and commercial development a few years ago. An Ontario Municipal Board hearing in 2009 allowed the property owner to begin developing the property. It first began removing the soil in a remediation program under the city’s ERASE program.
The hotel and Denny’s will join a busy $100-million retail and commercial development that already includes a WalMart, a new 43,000-square-foot Toys R Us, expected to be ready later this fall, a Buffalo Wild Wing, a Subway, Mucho Burrito, Five Guys Burger and Fries, and Extreme Pita. A portion of the development is expected to also include office space.
