Residents of the Ryckmans neighbourhood can expect some good news this week.
Council is expected to approve rezoning of the land in the centre of their community to only be used for park land.
Residents have used the land — formerly public school board property and zoned industrial — as a public park for years.
Ward 7 (central Mountain) Coun. Scott Duvall pushed his fellow councillors to buy the 2.3-hectare (5.7-acre) property off Dicenzo Drive in the Upper Wellington-Rymal area after the school board declared it surplus and put up for sale. The city bought the land in 2009. Duvall said the new P1 zoning designation will ensure nothing is built on the green space.
“Now as P1 that’s the only thing it can be used as, as a park,” said Duvall.
