Police step impaired driving enforcement for New Year’s

Hamilton police will be on the look out for impaired driving this New Year’s Eve.

Police have checked more than 235,000 vehicles in RIDE lanes in 2013, resulting in 484 alcohol-related charges.

“Impaired driving leads to the tragic loss of lives and it is 100 per cent preventable,” said Hamilton police staff sgt. Robert Hersics.  “Our message is simple – don’t drink and drive.”

Hamilton police are continuing a partnership with the Hamilton Bulldogs AHL hockey club this season. Police will be issuing vouchers for a free Bulldogs game ticket to drivers who successfully complete RIDE lanes.

Police are also encouraging motorists to report suspected impaired drivers through the Operation Look Out program. By calling 911, citizens can anonymously report suspected impaired driving. Police have already made 167 arrests through the program in 2013.
