Pan Am Stadium delay could be up to six weeks

 By Kevin Werner, News Staff

The consortium that is constructing the Pan Am Stadium confirmed in a March 20 letter sent to the city and politicians that the $147.5 million facility could be delayed in a “worst case scenario” by up to six weeks.

“We now confirm that there is the possibility of a delay to the Substantial Completion date for the Hamilton Soccer Stadium,” stated Samuel Gandossi, project director.

The problems for missing the June 30 deadline is “beyond the control of (Ontario Sports Solutions), and will provide the “relevant details in due course.” But Gandossi suggests that the severe winter weather has had a “significant impact” on the work, reducing the number of work days to complete the stadium on time. ONSS attempted to work around the difficult weather issues to allow the work to continue by allowing construction to take place over the weekends and double-shifting staff.

The 22,500-seat stadium was scheduled to be 95 per cent complete by the end of June. But a series of issues have dogged the construction, including the Dec. 23 ice storm that put the time table back two weeks. In addition one of the companies working on the stadium went bankrupt last December.

John McKendrick of Infrastructure Ontario warned city officials and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a February letter to create a contingency plan in case the stadium isn’t ready on time.

Hamilton politicians are schedule to discuss the stadium delay March 25 at their Pan Am Stadium Precinct subcommittee meeting.

The Ticats had scheduled their first home game at Tim Hortons Field for July 26 against Ottawa. They also are scheduled to host Calgary at Tim Hortons Field Aug. 18.

The Hamilton football club will open their pre-season game June 14 against Montreal at McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium.
