Hamilton police say no charges are expected after a 37-year-old city woman was struck and killed by a dump truck trailer at the intersection of Barton Street East and the northbound off ramp of the Red Hill Valley Parkway early this morning.
Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings said the dump truck was headed west on Barton and went through the intersection on a green light at about 5:40 a.m. as the woman was standing beside her bicycle on the north side and waiting to cross to the other side.
The woman stepped off the sidewalk as the truck passed by and was hit by its trailer. The driver and a witness came to her assistance but she was later pronounced dead at the scene. It was Hamilton’s 12 traffic fatality of 2012.
The 65-year-old Hamilton driver was uninjured, and his truck and trailer passed an inspection by Ministry of Transportation officials.
Police were withholding the woman’s name at her family’s request. Any witnesses who have yet to speak to police are asked to call detective constables Matt Hewko or Hendrik Vandercraats at 905-546-4755.
