Organization planning to celebrate 125th anniversary
The Mountain child centre run by the Hamilton YWCA appears to be settling in nicely at its new home.
Denise Doyle, chief executive officer of the organization, said the operation moved from the Long and Bisby Building on Sanatorium Road in the Chedoke brow lands over Christmas to Gordon Price elementary school on Guildwood Road.
“Our lease had come to an end at the Long and Bisby Building,” said Doyle who noted the west Mountain elementary school was already set up for a childcare centre and the space was available.
Doyle said the YWCA took over the child care operation from Hamilton Health Sciences in 2006.
The centre has five staff and is licensed for 31 children.
Valery Homes, who purchased the 23 acre brow lands property north of Scenic Drivein late 2012 with the intention of building a modest residential development on the site, has indicated the historic Long and Bisby Building will be turned into commercial space.
Meanwhile, Doyle said the YWCA is working on plans to celebrate 125 years in Hamilton later this year.
The celebrations will start when the Hamilton group hosts the national YWCA Canada annual members’ meeting June 4-6.
About 200 people are expected to attend the event at the Sheraton Hotel.
