Renting a U-Haul truck to steal power tools and cigarette lighters from a storage shed outside the Canadian Tire on Upper Gage Avenue didn’t prove to be the brightest idea for two thieves.
Const. Claus Wagner said Hamilton police received a call from a citizen about some “suspicious activity” outside the store at about 11 p.m. on March 14 and located the truck a short distance away as it fled the scene.
The two occupants were arrested after officers spotted the filched power tools and lighters.
A 22-year-old Hamilton man is charged with theft and possession of stolen good under $5,000, possession of burglary tools and breach of probation.
His 23-year-old male accomplice, also of Hamilton, is charged with theft and possession of stolen good under $5,000, and possession of burglary tools.
Both were held overnight for a bail hearing.
