Venue a week late due to slow start to growing season
Seven farms from in and around the Hamilton area are expected to be selling plants and produce when the Hamilton Mountain Farmers’ Market opens for a seventh season on Saturday.
Chuck Emberson, chair of the Mountain farmers’ market advisory committee, noted the market, located in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at Mountain Park Avenue andViewpoint Avenue, is opening a week later than in previous years.
“The weather’s been a bit cooler,” Emberson said. “Talking to a number of our farmers, especially with bedded plants and stuff…they’re weeks behind where they were the last couple of years.”
Despite the slow arrival of spring, Emberson said the market will have an abundance of bedding plants and early spring produce like fiddleheads and green garlic along with some stored fruits such as apples and greenhouse vegetables like tomatoes and peppers.
Emberson said fresh honey will also be available at the market and church volunteers will be running a barbecue and selling baked goods.
He said the produce will reflect the growing season and as many as area 12 growers will be on hand in the coming weeks.
New to the market this year is Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) wines from the Cornerstone Estates winery in Beamsville.
Emberson said the winery is owned by Wanda Farms, a year-one supporter of the market.
The province recently permitted the selling of VQA wines at farmers markets in Ontario.
VQA wines must meet a number of criteria including that they must be 100 percent made from fresh Ontario-grown grapes.
The market runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday until Nov. 8.
Emberson noted about 1,000 people visit the market each week.
