UPDATED A 35-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder after the mother of his baby boy was found dead from stab wounds at their Stoney Creek apartment on Sunday.
Det. Sgt. Matt Kavanagh said police were called to a third-floor apartment unit at 2 Cherrywood Dr. to investigate a possible homicide and discovered Tania Cowell, 36, alone inside.
She had suffered several stab wounds during an attack that happened sometime Saturday night or early Sunday, he said.
Her boyfriend, Haiden Suarez Noa, was arrested in Guelph by police there without incident.
Kavanagh said Suarez Noa had lived in Guelph before moving into the victim’s apartment about four months ago.
He said the couple were in a common-law relationship and had a five-month-old boy, who was with his father at the time of the arrest and has been placed in the care of the Children’s Aid Society.
“There was no harm to the child,” he said, calling the situation “very sad.”
Kavanagh said police have no motive for the killing and neither the victim nor accused were known to police.
He said the second-degree murder charge “means it wasn’t premeditated and he used force that he ought to have known would cause death.”
Police continue to investigate and ask anyone who knew the couple to call Det. Peter Thom at 905-546-3843 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
“There have been some people come forward that know them but we’re hoping that there’s more,” Kavanagh said. “As information comes in, as the investigation unfolds, we’re finding that there’s more and more.”
