The intersection of Upper Gage and Fennell Ave. East is closed while City of Hamilton workers repair a 12-inch water main which burst Thursday night and caused a sinkhole in the middle of the intersection.

Large sinkhole closes streets on Hamilton Mountain

The intersection of Upper Gage and Fennell will be closed for much of today as work crews repair a water main break that caused a large sinkhole.

A break in the 12-inch pipe occurred late Thursday night and caused a 10-metre-square sinkhole in the intersection.

The cause of the break was not immediately known; the intersection is not expected to reopen to traffic until tonight.

Three other water main breaks were reported in the area, including one on Fennell east of Upper Ottawa, which also forced a road closure.

Workers have to dig up the intersection, make repairs to the pipe and repave the road before it can reopen.
