While most of the students are gone, the student residence at Mohawk College is anything but quiet these days.

A number of the 170 suites in the residence on the Fennell campus are now being rented by out-of-town visitors.

“Basically what we offer is a unique, affordable alternative accommodation during the summer months from May through August each year,” said Patty Alencar, sales manager of the Mohawk residence and conference centre.

Mohawk is among 94 colleges and universities across the country that is offering dorm rooms and apartments for rent when the campuses are traditionally quiet.

Alencar said the centre, which is owned by the college and managed by Campus Living Centres, will see upwards of about 1,000 guests over the next four months.

She figures about 80 percent of the two bedroom suites will be rented out mostly to weekend visitors who are in town for conferences, tradeshows, tournaments and events at the college or elsewhere inHamilton.

“We are busy during the summer season,” said Alencar, who noted the suites rent for $74.95 a night double occupancy.

There’s also a weekly rate of about $60 per night (minimum seven nights) and a monthly rate (minimum 30 days) for about $40 per night.

The suites come with full size refrigerators, a microwave oven, cable TV and free Internet.

Alencar said visitors can also use of the centre’s 30-seat theatre to watch DVDs along with the games room, outdoor barbecue and laundry and kitchen facilities.

She expects the residence to be buzzing when the Pan-Am soccer games roll into Hamilton in July 2015.

“We don’t expect to be sold out, but we expect to be very busy,” Alencar said.
