Hamilton to get new area code

 By Kevin Werner, News Staff

You will need more numbers to reach out and touch someone starting in March.

Hamilton, the Niagara Region, and the area outsideToronto, up toBellevilleand into the Kawarthas will be getting the new area code 365 to go along with the 905 and 289 codes.

The new number, similar to the number of days in the year, will begin March 25, and will probably start showing up on cell phones, said a Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission spokesperson.

This is the first time that a third area code has been added to a region in Canada.

The CRTC made the decision in 2010.

Torontois scheduled to get a third area code 437 to go along with its 416 and 647 codes after March 25.

The new area code was prompted by the warnings made by the Canadian Numbering Administrator, which oversees the distribution of phone numbers in Canada, that the region was scheduled to run out of telephone numbers by March 2014.

Each area code has more than seven million possible combinations, said officials.

Provincial officials have noted within the next 20 years there will be an extra three million people living within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas.

Meanwhile, the CRTC is already preparing southern Ontario municipalities with area codes 226 and 519, which will be running out of telephone numbers by January 2017. The CRTC in late 2012 established a Relief Planning Committee to review possible solutions to make recommendations to the CRTC. The CRTC will then make a decision.

Also in danger of no more numbers are residents in Alberta, which is running out of 403, 587 and 780 area codes, by June 2018.
