Driver refuses to let pickup truck flee collision

A 41-year-old Hamilton man faces drunk-driving charges after being tailed all the way onto the east Mountain by another motorist who refused to let a pickup truck flee an accident near the bottom of the Sherman Cut.

Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings said the chase began at about 12:30 a.m. this morning following a collision between the two vehicles on Charlton Avenue near Wentworth Street.

The pickup truck, which sustained damage to a front tire, kept going and hit two traffic arms on the access as it drove up the Mountain and onto the Upper Gage Street. It finally came to a halt by the Lincoln Alexander Parkway.

Police were called and arrested the driver, who blew more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in breath tests.

He was released on a promise to appear in court after being charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 mg. and failure to remain on the scene of an accident.
