Firefighters cut through roof of Chedoke School to access fire Wednesday night.

Chedoke school closed after fire

More than 20 firefighters battled a blaze at Chedoke School on the west Mountain late Wednesday.

Police said the fire started — and was confined to — a second-floor science lab at the Bendamere Avenue public elementary school, but as of 10 p.m. a cause had not yet been determined.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified.
Cause of the blaze is not known yet and there has been no estimate of damage.
The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board said late Wednesday the school will be closed Thursday. It is not known if it will open Friday. You can check on the closure HERE.
The call came in at 9 p.m. from the school board’s alarm company. A custodian was in the school at the time, but was not injured.
Firefighters had the flames knocked down within the hour, but extensive smoke and water damage will require heavy cleanup, police said.
Fire crews encountered heavy smoke rolling from the second floor of the school and although damage was confined to one room, thick smoke permeated the school.
Holes had to be cut in the roof to clear out the smoke.
